The military does not hide the fact that bootcamp is damn hard, it doesn't hide the fact the food might not be like dear old mom's, it does not hide the fact that you will get yelled at, you might even get your butt kicked by someone, they do not hide the fact that you may go to war.Carla, I agree with you, but the issue is, what DO they hide?
leavingwt said if people had ALL the facts they wouldn't want to join the JWs. First of all, no one can say that, because not "everyone" would refuse to join.
If the military disclosed ALL the facts of being "in", some people who were thinking of joining, would not.
After serving my country in a certain "capacity" I know this to be true, and so should you.
By the way, just so you don't call me some kind of "commie", I commend your patriotism.

Yes, I do so quite often. Almost continually, in fact, since I'm always on a search for meaning.
Jamie, someone who 'sees things with a wicked fine clarity' does not 'almost continually' search their current beliefs 'for meaning'.
While we should examine our beliefs occasionally, to search them continually implies that, in fact, we are NOT very clear about our beliefs.
Now DanielP's words quoted above imply that he does not see anything 'with a wicked fine clarity', EXCEPT that he is NOT really sure, which is why he is 'always on a search for meaning'. On that point, he is clear.

The recruitment process involves deception. If a curious/newly interested person had ALL of the facts, they indeed wouldn't want to join.
So then, the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force qualify.
When I went for my physical, the soldier in charge told us that to the recruitment office we were "just a number" and they would tell us anything just to get us to "sign on the dotted line".

Is your question meant as an attempt to dismiss my point?
Actually, what I have found is those who leave the JW's do not examine their current beliefs with the same set of critical eyes.

I respect people who hold religious beliefs, but it's hard to respect those who cannot analyze their own beliefs critically. Is there any excuse for cowardice?
Do you, or have you analyzed your CURRENT beliefs?

Yes. It's all good if you have the mental capacity of a child and can't think for yourself.
Nice way to attract lurkers.

the family was pretty excitable and I remember lots of yelling rather than talking rationally.
That's what science does to people.
Can you imagine the reaction, especially here, if these people had been "religious fanatics"?

Did the sun stand still and go backwards up the steps?
by TJ - iAmCleared2Land inbeen a while since i posted here, but driving into work the other day i recalled how "excited" we all were when it was announced that scientists had discovered "proof" that there is a full "day" missing astronomically, for the exact period of time covered by joshua's having the sun stand still, and isaiah having the sun move backwards, sending the shadow back up the steps for hezekiah.. that got me searching jwd for a thread about this topic, and i didn't find one, but i did find this snopes article.. http://www.snopes.com/religion/lostday.asp.

JWoodpecker,
these people were just not worth it.
To you, and maybe to me, but if this event occurred, obviously they were worth it.
Zebus Rights - when contemplating the many possible explanations for something, the most simple one is the most likely to be true.
Who is to judge what the simplest explanation is?
We do not have the testimony of the people who were there (evidence in the cemetery), AND we do not know all of the "unknown, unknowns" concerning this event.
Just because we don't know how this happened, if it happened, it doesn't mean that it didn't happen.

God could, as Creator, if he wished, stop the motions of the whole solar system.
Or, he could stop the motion of only the earth so that sun and moon appeared to remain in the same position as viewed from the earth.
On the other hand, it is possible that the sun, moon and earth all continued on in their regular movements, but that the light from sun and moon ceaselessly shone by some form of refraction that we do not now understand.
Three possibilities out of how many unknown? It is IMPOSSIBLE to say.

It might be well to realize that Amnesty International does not think that ANYBODY, ANYWHERE should receive the death penalty, including that Mumia guy who killed a cop and was caught with the gun in his hand.
JWoodpecker,
You might as well talk to the wall rather than these people.
Bible, Schmible.
This person killed a 64 year old man................IN HIS OWN HOME.
Elsewhere, if that was your dad, or your grandfather, you wouldn't be making a joke out of it. Your brain is "Elsewhere", as it is for the others, except for JWoodpecker.
